The 928 story
by Adam Towler
Introduction
The 928 is a true enigma. It seems impossible for a journalist to write a story about the 928 without citing the car’s failure to replace the 911, or the perception that buying one as a classic car is a potential minefield. But this is the very same car that was deemed the future back in 1977, and with good reason. This is the car – the only sports car – to win a Car of the Year gong. Ok, say what you like about this motoring equivalent of the European song contest, but for a sports car to win outright – that’s something quite profound. It is a car that always tried to be many things on four wheels, but as the years passed, was tasked with becoming a quite different sort of vehicle: an aggressive sports GT rather than an all-round everyday supercar.

The 2022 Porsche 928 buyers guide from 928.org.uk

What to pay when buying a Porsche 928 in the UK in 2022
"Judging by the car you have chosen, you are a motorist of a special breed, and you are probably no novice when it comes to automobiles." - Porsche 928 S4 owners manual.
Prices rose astronomically from 2015-2021 even for ordinary and rotten cars with no history and zillions of owners. Many of these cars still do not represent good value and will require tens of thousands to be spend on missing maintenance, recommissioning and paint and fixtures. Dealers are sitting on expensive cars that have been around for a long time.
Notable exceptions are the truly mint cars with excellent histories and regular use which have sold for really strong money since 2014. The Egyptian embassy 928 S4 SE with 10,000 miles on it sold for £132,000 including fees, and a 30k mile Porsche 928 GT sold for £43,000 at the same auction on 14th November 2020. Caveat emptor though, these were exceptional cars. Please don't buy a rotten Porsche 928 unless it is inexpensive or it will break your heart. It is relatively easy to find good ones. It is relatively hard to find perfect ones. It is expensive to turn a good one into a perfect one. Start by coming to our meetings (when we can have them again), and talking to owners. There are over 800 on the road in the UK out of an original UK population of well over 4,000. The Porsche 928 is not a particularly rare car.
This guide is published only at 928.org.uk - the home of the 928 community in the UK and the 928uk mail list.
Please don't rely solely on this guide. Get plenty of advice and opinions from our community. Read on for full analysis. Not everyone agrees with me about pricing. I have only been monitoring 928 pricing for 20 years after all.
Upgrading the Porsche 928 Radio preserving original look
by Angus Fox
Swap out the old broken Blaupunkt Toronto for a 2020 Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB+
This is relatively straightforward as long as you dont mind a little electrical connecting. (Please dont use Scotch Locks think about the next person rewiring in ten years time swearing at you)! You will also need a little patience. My personal choice would be to retain a Blaupunkt OEM look and Blaupunkt have in 2020 relaunched a radio which was originally fitted to the Porsche 928! - the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB+ (Amazon UK) which has been updated for the 21st century.

Porsche 928 Model variations and features
These were some of the oldest pages on 928.org.uk. They showed participants cars for almost all model year variations and for a long time we had a locator to match people to cars. In editing the site in 2020 (in a long overdue sort out); the names of contributors have been removed since owners change and we have a responsibility to privacy that wasn't there in 1999 when this page was originally written. Ive added galleries for each model year of 928 as there are zillions of pictures on the website. To download any given picture you have to be logged in to the website as a registered user (which is different to being on the 928uk mail list).
