The transaxle concept positions the engine up front and the transmission at the back, with a rigid shaft connecting them. With the 924, Porsche made the bold decision 50 years ago to strike out in a new direction – technically, economically, and culturally. The design introduced a new sports car world alongside that of the 911, supporting the company through a period of transition.

Woven from dreams: Porsche brings back historic 928 fabrics

Inspired by waving chequered flags, the Pasha pattern pays tribute to the world of motorsport. First presented to the public in a 928 in 1977, in the south of France, and also offered in the 911, 924 and 944 until the mid-1980s, the pulsating, lively pattern became one of Porsche's most defining interior designs.

Iconic fabric patterns such as Pasha, tartan and Pepita are once again available in Porsche quality. Porsche has reissued these textiles, meaning that the interiors of many historic and more recent sports cars from the 356 to the 911 can be restored to their original condition. The fabrics are once again available to order from Porsche Centres or via the Porsche Online Shop.

Saturday morning saw some 22 Porsche 928's head for Oxford, for our 27th annual meetup at the Merry Miller. When we started the list and website we resolved each year to have a meetup to chat about things 928 and V8 related.

We've only missed one through snow and one through Covid-19. Several of us there yesterday were on the legendary 928 trip to the factory 25 years ago this weekend. These cars grow on you. Even though I don't own one presently I love seeing them, chatting with owners and hearing the V8 burble.

TL:DR – I made it this year and really enjoyed catching up with everyone. My favourite car was the beautifully restored 1982 Porsche 928 S in Guards Red and Black, manual and no sunroof of course!

TL:DR – The proper selection of tyres for your Porsche 928 can alter your driving experience considerably, emphasising performance, safety, and handling. N-rated tyres are specifically tested and designed for Porsche vehicles and have specific charcteristics including a reinforced radial structure along with more rigid sidewalls that enhance performance with Porsche vehicles. Given the various options available, owners are encouraged to consider value versus performance in their tyre selection while ensuring correct tyre pressure is maintained.

The Legacy of the Porsche 989 V8 4-Door dream that never came true

Last Updated: 01 April 2025

The Porsche 989 project was part of a crucial chapter in the company's effort to diversify its range and represented the realisation of a need for a significant shift for the manufacturer known primarily for its two-door sports cars. Developed between 1988 and 1991, the 989 was envisioned as a four-door sports tourer that could offer ample space without compromising on performance. This article examines the Porsche 989, its architectural features, its eventual demise, and its influence on future Porsche models.

TL:DR – The Porsche 989 was an ambitious project aimed at creating a luxury performance sedan that ultimately crashed due to financial realities and changing market demands. Although never produced, its design elements can be traced to later models like the Panamera and the 996-generation 911, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate within the company's products today.

TL:DR – While several cars attempt to capture the 928’s magic, none have fully succeeded. Porsche may yet create a modern 928, but for now, its legacy remains unique.

Porsche 928-4 Four-seater prototype

Created by the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, this was a version of the 928 S that was extended by 25 centimetres. The longer wheelbase and the modifications to the B-pillar and door frame meant that passengers in the rear had an extra 20 centimetres of legroom – attributes that can now be found in the new Panamera Sport Turismo in more or less the same form. Some additional features of this one-off creation were the projector headlights, hatchback design, leather interior and green tinted windows.

The car was presented to Ferry Porsche on September 19, 1984 as a gift on his birthday. It is now held by the Porsche Museum.

Model year: 1984
Engine: 8-cylinder V
Displacement: 4958 cm³
Power: 310 hp (228 kW)
Weight empty: 1625 kg
Top speed: 260 km/h

The heart of its powertrain is a fundamentally revised four-litre V8 turbo engine.

More E-Performance and comprehensively revamped engines

Porsche offers a total of four efficient E-Hybrid powertrains for the new Panamera, in response to the high demand for this type of drive system. All E-Hybrid variants benefit from greater performance, range and efficiency. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid is ready at market launch. The heart of its powertrain is a fundamentally revised four-litre V8 turbo engine. The output of the newly developed electric motor is 140 kW (190 PS). Together, they create a system output of 500 kW (680 PS). The system torque reaches an impressive 930 Nm. Porsche integrates the electric motor into the housing of the comprehensively redesigned eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Dispensing with a separate E-motor housing saves around five kilograms. The integration of the unit into the oil circuit of the transmission also optimises the heat balance of the electric drive unit and allows higher continuous output from the electric motor.

The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid sprints to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and boasts a top speed of 315 km/h. Its battery capacity is now 25.9 kWh. This enables an equivalent electric range of up to 91 kilometres in the combined WLTP cycle or 83–93 km in the city cycle. A new 11 kW on-board AC charger shortens the charging time at suitable charging points to 2 hours and 39 minutes.

"The control concept that Porsche is now using in the new Panamera is innovative and intuitive: the Porsche Driver Experience puts the driver at the centre and creates the perfect balance between analogue and digital elements. The sports car among luxury saloons is characterised by a particularly high-quality and extremely sporty interior ambience."

"Wouldn't you love a Porsche 928 like this? This is what a 928 interior re-imagined for the CarPlay and Digital age would look like."

Angus – 928.org.uk

The new model Porsche Panamera will feature the driver-centred Porsche Driver Experience control concept that was first introduced in the Taycan. It offers a fully digital display, a wide range of customisation options and intuitive operation. A key feature of the concept is the grouping of the control elements relevant for driving in the immediate vicinity of the steering wheel. All elementary functions are therefore quick and intuitive for the driver to access. This simplifies operation of the new Panamera in all driving situations, and especially during dynamic driving.

Can you see a Porsche 928 in these pictures?

The Porsche 928 is a standout in automotive history. Introduced in the late '70s, it broke away from Porsche's traditional rear-engine layout, featuring a front-mounted V8 instead. Designed as a grand tourer, the 928 was ahead of its time with its futuristic styling and innovative technonogy, including its Weissach rear axle. Despite initial skepticism, it retains a loyal following and proved Porsche's versatility in engineering. Seeing a 928 at the museum gives you a real sense of its impact and the bold choices Porsche remains willing to make.

Porsche Boxster (986) at 25 - a retrospective

Back in 1995 Porsche was in a mess. The flagship 928 GTS was at the end of the line and selling very poorly. While the 928 remains my favourite Porsche by miles, it cannot be denied that it had seen little in the way of modernising investment since the introduction of the GTS in 1992. It was emblematic of the problems with the production car model range. What could be done to stem the losses and modernise? The Boxster (986) - that's what. Officially, 164,875 Porsche Boxster (986) vehicles were produced across the range of models between model year 1997 and 2004 - saving the company and its brand from an uncertain future and paving the way for modern production practices.

Big bang for your buck? 200BHP classics for £10k

Classic car weekly published this page on April 8 2015 and featured the Porsche 928 as an example of a 200BHP (its more) classic that you can buy for £10k (you can't, or if you do it will be a nail). Ignoring their prices which talk of Concours cars for £8500, there are some good points. The buying tips aren't bad. The other cars in their list included 60's Jag 420, 80's Vauxhall Carlton (why?), 90's TVR Chimaera 4.0. They don't make any kind of competition for the Porsche 928 for me.
