It looks like something that’s come from the set designers of ‘Mad Max’, or like a prototype time machine from ‘Back to the Future’. But there’s more to it than that. This Porsche 928 is an endurance runner, a rolling test bench with a long history.

Porsche 928-4 Four-seater prototype
Created by the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, this was a version of the 928 S that was extended by 25 centimetres. The longer wheelbase and the modifications to the B-pillar and door frame meant that passengers in the rear had an extra 20 centimetres of legroom – attributes that can now be found in the new Panamera Sport Turismo in more or less the same form. Some additional features of this one-off creation were the projector headlights, hatchback design, leather interior and green tinted windows.
The car was presented to Ferry Porsche on September 19, 1984 as a gift on his birthday. It is now held by the Porsche Museum.
Model year: 1984 Engine: 8-cylinder V Displacement: 4958 cm³ Power: 310 hp (228 kW) Weight empty: 1625 kg Top speed: 260 km/h

Porsche Museum
Can you see a Porsche 928 in these pictures?
The Porsche 928 is a standout in automotive history. Introduced in the late '70s, it broke away from Porsche's traditional rear-engine layout, featuring a front-mounted V8 instead. Designed as a grand tourer, the 928 was ahead of its time with its futuristic styling and innovative technonogy, including its Weissach rear axle. Despite initial skepticism, it retains a loyal following and proved Porsche's versatility in engineering. Seeing a 928 at the museum gives you a real sense of its impact and the bold choices Porsche remains willing to make.

Annual meeting – Saturday 6th November 2021
To celebrate our anniversary we returned to The Merry Miller at Cothill near Oxford on Saturday 6th November.
Saturday was a lively day. The weather mostly held and 30 Porsche 928s made it to the meetup. As usual I tried to talk to everyone but failed. Sorry if I didnt catch up with you - the meetup seemed to be over in no time. News of a few cars whose owners planned to come along but various issues stopped them also reached us. Next time folks! Its only 360 days till we do it again.

Back in 1995 Porsche was in a mess. The flagship 928 GTS was at the end of the line and selling very poorly. While the 928 remains my favourite Porsche by miles, it cannot be denied that it had seen little in the way of modernising investment since the introduction of the GTS in 1992. It was emblematic of the problems with the production car model range. What could be done to stem the losses and modernise? The Boxster (986) - that's what. Officially, 164,875 Porsche Boxster (986) vehicles were produced across the range of models between model year 1997 and 2004 - saving the company and its brand from an uncertain future and paving the way for modern production practices.

In 1977, the Porsche 928 came onto the market with a bang. A Gran Turismo with a futuristic yet timeless design. This touring sports car of a bygone era has bequeathed its DNA to the Panamera. And in particular the Panamera Turbo. We take to the road with these soulmates.

I own two 928s that are amongst the best in the UK. This is the story of how I reached this point – “928 Heaven” with a 1991 guards red 928 GT and a 1994 midnight blue 928 GTS with manual gear box.

Porsche 928 S4 with Sport Equipment
There are quite a few pics of Porsche 928 S4 SE / 928 S4 Sports dotted around the website. I've tried to collect them all here.
SE's were the UK only predecessor to the Club Sport. Available in Red, White, Black or Silver. There were 42. Several have been scrapped/written off.

Introduction
The 928 is a true enigma. It seems impossible for a journalist to write a story about the 928 without citing the car’s failure to replace the 911, or the perception that buying one as a classic car is a potential minefield. But this is the very same car that was deemed the future back in 1977, and with good reason. This is the car – the only sports car – to win a Car of the Year gong. Ok, say what you like about this motoring equivalent of the European song contest, but for a sports car to win outright – that’s something quite profound. It is a car that always tried to be many things on four wheels, but as the years passed, was tasked with becoming a quite different sort of vehicle: an aggressive sports GT rather than an all-round everyday supercar.

What to pay when buying a Porsche 928 in the UK in 2024
"Judging by the car you have chosen, you are a motorist of a special breed, and you are probably no novice when it comes to automobiles." - Porsche 928 S4 owners manual.
Prices rose astronomically from 2015 even for ordinary and rotten cars with no history and zillions of owners. Many of these cars still do not represent good value and will require tens of thousands to be spend on missing maintenance, recommissioning and paint and fixtures.
Notable exceptions are the truly mint cars with excellent histories and regular use which have sold for really strong money since 2014. The Egyptian embassy 928 S4 SE with 10,000 miles on it sold for £132,000 including fees, and a 30k mile Porsche 928 GT sold for £43,000 at the same auction on 14th November 2020. Caveat emptor though, these were exceptional cars. Please don't buy a rotten Porsche 928 unless it is inexpensive or it will break your heart. It is relatively easy to find good ones. It is relatively hard to find perfect ones. It is very expensive to turn a good one into a perfect one. Start by coming to our meetings and talking to owners. There are over 800 on the road in the UK out of an original UK population of well over 4,000. The Porsche 928 is not a particularly rare car.
This guide is published only at 928.org.uk and in the My 928uk app - the home of the 928 community in the UK and the 928uk mail list.
Please don't rely solely on this guide. Get plenty of advice and opinions from our community. Read on for full analysis. Not everyone agrees with me about pricing. I have only been monitoring 928 pricing for 20 years after all.

Swap out the old broken Blaupunkt Toronto for a 2020 Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB+
This is relatively straightforward as long as you dont mind a little electrical connecting. (Please dont use Scotch Locks think about the next person rewiring in ten years time swearing at you)! You will also need a little patience. My personal choice would be to retain a Blaupunkt OEM look and Blaupunkt in 2020 relaunched a radio which was originally fitted to the Porsche 928! - the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB+ (Amazon UK) which has been updated for the 21st century.

A correctly setup 928 should not hit the ground or float - in fact the handling should be very tight and surefooted. If not then Shock Absorbers, Springs and/or Ride height are the likely causes. Check the ride height before investigating the other more expensive options.
