A Frenzy of Sharks – that was the sight on roads to Tilford as pre-meetings turned into convoys.
31 cars parked on the green (with a few early leavers) and green keeper donations came to nearly £120 so thank you everyone for that.
For the first time in 14 years rain was the order of the day for most unless you stayed a bit later when the sun finally broke through.
“Great day despite the rain - that just made the pub even more fun!” - Steve Sydee.
The Barley Mow serves great food too;
“Cod with new potatoes in a white wine, lemon and dill sauce with black pudding and poached egg - who'd have thought it up, but yummy !” - Paul Lacey.
Stewart and Sue did a great job in organising the meeting every year, it became a main event and probably the only time you can see so many Porsche 928 of various years in the same place in the UK.

Sadly, it has been SORN for two years now, and although I love it, my SE is beyond my skill level and budget so it had to go. Its gone to a good home though. Phil Rickard of the mail list is the very best person in the world who could have taken it on. It needs a ground up restoration and he's the man. It couldnt have gone to a better place. I have had it for 9 years. I didnt realise it was that long! I will pause a while, but I fancy an early early car or a last of the line GTS Auto. Every 928 I have has has been a manual so far and its time for a change!

Dropped in to Porsche Service Centre Brooklands yesterday to see the Macan and chat Porsche with them. They are always so welcoming and well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Here are some pics. What do you think? I love it. I love these wheels! I'm not sure it would replace the Cayenne but as a second car its pretty interesting. Trouble is they are on an 18 month waiting list.

The last Saturday in November 2013 saw the 15th annual gathering of Porsche 928 cars at the Merry Miller pub which was organised by Andrew Brierley.
There were 35 cars in attendance including the first and last UK registered which provided a nice photo opportunity. Andrew also organised a couple of competitions, one for the favourite car at the meeting and the other for guessing how much it has cost Andrew to maintain his own 928 for the last 13 years not including paint and tyres. Prizes were a $100 credit to spend with Roger Tyson of 928srus.com. The runner up prize was £50 toward parts from Simon Watson and a 2014 Porsche 928 calendar.
Barry Barton won favourite car for his Chiffon white S2 with red leather interior and white piping. The car also has interesting gulf colours along the rub strips and matched painted wheels. The runner up was John Vaughan for his immaculate 1978 Silver car pictured below.
Trevor Peddle guessed £18,565 which was the closest to Andrew’s maintenance costs of £16,998.18 and Bill Robertson was runner up with his guess of £19,101.32.
“Thanks to everyone who turned up at the Merry Miller today, I counted 35 928s, a good turnout helped by the great weather. It certainly made my 350 mile round trip easier driving in decent weather conditions.” - Andrew Brierley.
Philip Rickard must take the prize for the longest distance travelled as he came from Cumbria and that is probably around 280 miles each way!
It was pretty cold outside but the food and warm open fire in the pub was very nice indeed. I heard recommendations for the raspberry crème brulee and cheesecake.

The 13th annual meeting took place in Tilford, Surrey on the first Saturday in October 2013
It was arranged by Stewart and Sue Wren, they probably arrange the nice weather too. It’s the largest gathering of the Porches 928 in the UK each year, taking place on the green opposite the Barley Mow pub.
“Another great day with great weather and great 928s.” – Eric Coolen
“Thanks again to Stewart and Sue for arranging this. It is a fantastic staple of the 928 calendar. It was great to see some old friends and some new faces.” – Martin Taylor
“Want to add my thanks to Stewart & Sue for yet again making the best day in the 928 calendar happen, and for their influence with weather gods.” – Adrian Langford
In total around 52 cars attended. The distinctive V8 sound rumbled around the green as visitors came and went. Every model and almost every colour was represented from the earliest very well cared for silver car owned by John Vaughn through to S2, S4/GT and GTS models including the last one registered in the UK.
Chats between owners and visitors spilled into the pub over lunch and a beer (or two). Richard Armstrong filled up the AC systems of several cars leading to happy people and cool interiors. The green keeper thanked everyone for the £160 from donations for the future care of the cricket pitch.
If you brought your car along, thanks! If you didn't why not try and make it next year, I am sure Stewart will book great weather again and the chat, beer and food are all very good.

On a (rare) beautiful December morning, six 928 owners headed for Surrey Rolling Road in Chobham. As it turned out, we had a fantastic mix of pretty much every engine configuration that Porsche made for the 928. This was going to be a rare opportunity to compare the power and torque of the different engine versions fitted to 928's.

Ever since I have owned my 89S4 auto the radio has been quite bad, it forgets the radio stations and the speakers flap about which sounds like a lot of the presenters are passing wind. I thought it was about time to update it and do it on a budget. I expect I could have spent much more on it and included amplifiers and replace all of the speakers with components sets. I decided to replace 4 speakers, the 2 10cm speakers in the front doors and the 17cm speakers in the rear behind the seats, remove the old amp if installed and power the speakers from the head unit. The Apline speakers came to £75, the Kenwood radio was also around £75 and then I spent about £20 at Maplins.

After Angus had posted details on the 928 list regarding a 928 being required for filming in the Leeds area, I emailed them direct with a few pictures. The next day had a call from them saying they liked my car and would I come on the show.
So the day was set for 29th July for filming in Leeds but two weeks before the show I had a call to say that could I come along to the Classic car at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire instead?
We turn up at the show about 9.00am, Jason and Penny came along later.

Keys4Classics.com in Australia
Keys4Classics.Com offer both ORIGINAL and high quality SILCA brand European aftermarket replacement keys for Porsche 928, all years and variants.
The keys for the Porsche 928 have a very unusual design and are a challenge for most key makers or locksmiths Keys4Classics.Com have many years of experience with them and they cut you a key from a photo, they are very quick to answer emails and very prompt. I ordered a key and it worked perfectly, plus you get the code so you can order future keys. All done by email. My key was a generic Silcam, similar to the originals but without a Porsche name or logo; they have a durable solid black plastic head (no light).
Keys4Classics.com also offer the Original Huf key blad for the no-alarm (short) and with-alarm (long) key-blades (stems). These are genuine Porsche parts. The the original Porsche clip-on head is not included. They will cut original Porsche keys ONLY if your original key and photos are good and clear enough to make decoding unequivocal. For a very worn key, a poorly copied key, a hand-made key, or poor photos they will need to discuss your options.

UK stickers and number plates
If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.
However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:
- a GB identifier with the Union flag
- a Euro symbol
- a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
- numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier
If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.
Driving licences and international driving permits
You need to carry your UK driving licence with you.
You do not need an international driving permit (IDP) to visit and drive in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland or Liechtenstein.
You might need an IDP to drive in some EU countries and Norway if you have:
- a paper driving licence
- a licence that was issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man
You will not need an IDP to drive when visiting Ireland if you have a UK driving licence.
You can get an IDP over the counter at the Post Office.
An IDP costs £5.50 and drivers must:
- be a resident of Great Britain or Northern Ireland
- have a full UK driving licence
- be 18 or over
Driving licence exchange
If you live and drive in an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you need to exchange your driving licence for a local one.
Check the deadlines and rules for licence exchange in the country you live in.
Insurance for your vehicle, caravan or trailer
All UK vehicle insurance provides the minimum third party cover to drive in the EU (including Ireland).
You do not need to carry a green card when you drive in the EU (including Ireland), Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, or Switzerland. You still need valid vehicle insurance.
More about vehicle insurance.
Vehicle registration documents
If you’re taking your vehicle to the EU for less than 12 months, carry one of the following documents:
- your vehicle log book (V5C), if you have one
- a VE103 to show you’re allowed to use your hired or leased vehicle abroad
Trailer registration
You need to register some commercial and non-commercial trailers before towing them to or through most EU and EEA countries.
Find out more about trailer registration.
What to do if you’re involved in a road accident
If you’re involved in a road accident in an EU country, you should, in the first instance, contact your insurance provider.
Any legal proceedings against either the responsible driver or the insurance provider of the vehicle will need to be brought in the EU or EEA country where the accident happened. You might have to make your claim in the local language.
You will not get compensation in some countries if the accident is caused by an uninsured driver or if the driver cannot be traced.
Get legal advice if you need more information about this.
Breakdown insurance
Even if you have extended your policy for driving abroad, this will not cover your car against breaking down. Vehicle breakdown policies can be bought with your holiday insurance or separately. Check to see if your motor insurer can provide this cover.
A policy will cover the cost of hiring a car while your own is being repaired, road-side assistance and emergency repairs, the cost of returning your car to the UK and sending out spare parts, together with emergency accommodation if you are unable to use your vehicle. A monetary limit will apply to each section of the policy.
Protecting against car thieves
Foreign registered vehicles attract thieves, so do not make your car an easy target:
- Lock all doors and the boot when leaving the vehicle as well as closing windows and the sunroof.
- Park in a well-lit place.
- Avoid leaving your possessions in an unattended vehicle. If you have to leave property, make sure it is in a locked boot. In a Porsche 928, the rear luggage cover should be in position.
- Don't leave car ownership and insurance documents in your car when parked.
- Use an anti-theft device.
- Take your keys with you at the petrol station when you are going to pay.
- Dont leave your mobile phone or navigation gadget unattended.
Don't leave home without it - what to take with you
Don't set off unprepared. Make sure your vehicle is serviced before you leave and that you know of and comply with the vehicle requirements of the countries you are visiting. Don't forget that your vehicle must display the appropriate country identification letters (e.g. GB). And don't go without taking:
- A spare set of keys.
- A set of head lamp converters.
- A fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs and warning triangle.
- Registration document, driving licence and passport.
- Your UK motor insurance certificate, Green Card (if issued), details of any breakdown and travel insurance, together with any emergency helpline numbers.
Local emissions zones
Check carefully that you have the correct emissions sticker for your car for certain EU destination cities. You can obtain such stickers from the local vehicle licencing agency for the city whos laws you need to comply with. e.g. TUV for Munich.

I managed to get the jump on one morgan at the start and tailed the leader for the first lap with him squeezing me out of an overtake at woodcote on th eend of the first lap which resulted in me bumping the rear of his car at 120mph no damage to either car but still scary nonetheless.

Porsche made special Winter Wheel rims for the Porsche 928. I expect you wish you had a winter wheel set when it snows!
A note from our Finnish correspondent where Winter wheels and tyres are compulsory!
Personally I prefer friction tyres (made for Nordic area) because then I can use a bit wider wheels/tyres and the wheel noise is not so loud as it is with stud tyres. With friction tyres I think it is better to use a bit wider wheels/tyres because the tires are quite soft and 928 being a heavy car does not help the situation. With Nordic friction tyres you should not drive over 10 degrees of Celsius - or if you do you should be careful as those can "melt" under your car. There is some friction tyres for central Europe which are of harder material and can be used in high speeds even over 200kph.
When using friction tyres you better make sure that ABS and PSD are working perfectly. If not then stud tyres might be a safer choice
I was thinking of using a set of D90's from 944 S2. These are 8" and 7" wheels. Usually winter wheels/tyres are not as wide as summer tyres for better grip. This is especially true when using tyres with studs. Not so wide wheels/tyres are also useful if you are driving off the main roads where there can be snow/ice packed on the road and there can be a track which is usually so narrow that you might have problems running with wide wheels/tyres.
Many people in Finland prefer stud tyres as they provide better grip in icy situations. The stud technology has developed a lot recently and latest models are not so noisy anymore and the studs are really in use only in situations where they are needed e.g. they come out when braking, turning etc.
This is my first winter with 928 so we'll see if I have to switch to stud tyres in the middle of the winter season or do I manage with friction tyres. I am not absolutely sure how well the ABS and PSD are working but I am sure I will notice that after a couple weeks when there is snow everywhere ;-)

Readership votes GTS third, in GT Purely Porsche "Greatest Porsche" Poll 2005
GT Purely Porsche, a magazine in the UK dedicated to the Porsche marque, completed a poll to find the greatest Porsche model in 2005. The 928GTS placed 3rd, which is a fabulous result, especially as it was only beaten by the 917 (Porsche's most famous race car), and the 2.7 Carrera RS (Porsches most desirable 911). That must rank the 928 GTS as the greatest all round Porsche car that you can actually use as your car, as you can't really place the 917 and 2.7 RS in that bracket.
A legendary Porsche driving instructor, who has taught some notable 928 drivers how to get the best from the V8 supercar, is quoted as describing the GTS as "Beautifully dignified, powerful. Deceptively agile."
No. 1 - Porsche 917
Porsche 917 023 was the Le Mans winner in 1970.
No. 2 - Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7
The Carrera RS models from 1973 and 1974 are considered by many to be the greatest classic 911s of all-time.
No. 3 - Porsche 928 GTS
This lovely 1994 Porsche 928 GTS was for sale via this website in October 2021.
" ... for some (911 owners probably) a surprise that [the 928GTS] finished in the top three, ..."

Performance Upgrades
There are 2 types of performance upgrade owners can make to a 928:
Higher Specification Official Porsche Parts
This is where certain parts are replaced with Official Porsche parts originally fitted to a later, or more sporting Porsche.
Examples to consider:
- Replace wheels with GTS specification 17" Cup wheel
- Upgrade brakes to GTS specification (requires 17" wheels)
- Upgrade mirrors to GTS specification "tear drop" design (aka Ovoid mirrors)
- Upgrade suspension front springs to SE specification. (One of the best things to do!)
- Upgrade shock absorbers to SE/GT/Club Sport specification
- Upgrade springs to SE/GT/Club Sport specification
- Upgrade Exhaust to Sports or Techquipment specification
Third Party Performance Parts
This is where parts are upgraded to non Porsche parts that are of even higher performance.
Examples to consider
- Rear Muffler Bypass (RMB) - replaces the rear box with a straight pipe for a more sporty sound - Ask Paul Anderson to make you one
- Performance Chips - change the character of the engine for a more sporty performance
- Semi Racing Brake Pads - less dust more stopping power
- Aftermarket wheels and tyres
- Stroker Kit - take the engine out to 6litres! Not for the non mechanically minded.
- Body styling kits - Search for Jaquemond on google
